Burnham Set to Announce 20% Business Rates Cut for Hospitality
Prime Minister Andy Burnham is reportedly preparing a 20% cut to business rates for hospitality businesses, with an announcement expected within days. The move fulfils a pledge made during his Makerfield by-election campaign to ease the tax burden on pubs, clubs and music venues, while also raising the business rates threshold for independent hospitality, leisure and retail firms.
The cuts are expected to be funded by increasing business rates on large out-of-town distribution warehouses run by companies such as Amazon, shifting more of the tax burden onto online retail giants. Industry figures have offered cautious optimism, though many operators say they’ll be watching for firm action — and are also pushing Burnham for a commitment to cut hospitality VAT to 10%.
